"GOING ON EIGHT"
by Monroe E. Hawley
I have trouble remembering how old our twelve grandchildren are. The other day I asked
our grandson his age to which he responded without a moments hesitation, "Going on eight."
I briefly reflected on his reply and then realized that it will be three months before he
reaches that marvelous age.
Isn't it great to be able to anticipate the future? For many people the future is a blind
alley to be dreaded; the past has been bad, the future will be worse. But for the committed
Christian the future - after this life - means glorious hope of an eternal home. Paul the
Apostle well expressed this as he looked backward and then forward: "For I am already
being poured out as a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought
the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me
the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day
- and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing" (2 Timothy 4:6-8).
