"Fatherless Children"
by Mark Pugh
One of the great tragedies of the terrorist attacks on September 11th is so many children
left without fathers. According to the USA Today, 81% of those who died in the
World Trade Center collapse were men. According to one estimate, as many as 10,000 children
were left without fathers. Our hearts go out to all of those kids and to their moms, who now
must face the daunting task of rearing those children without their husbands.
Another great tragedy in our land today is the countless homes where fathers reside, but for
all practical intents and purposes, their children are fatherless. Sometimes this happens
because of work. Dad is married to his job and spends precious little time with his family. I
am reminded of the story of the little girl whose dad was a very busy man. When she called his
office to make an appointment with him, he got the message.
The number one reason for fatherless children is selfish dads. Too many dads are preoccupied
with their own lives. They are busy with golf or fishing or TV or sports. Nothing is wrong with
these pursuits until they take precedence over our kids. Determine that your kids will have a
dad who loves them and is directly involved in their lives. No more fatherless children, please!
